Reposing Special Trust and Confidence in the Loyalty, Courage, Prudence and Ability of Private August Brett of Company B 128th New York Infty. by virtue of the authority entrusted to my by the War Department, I do appoint said Private August Brett Captain of the First Regiment of Engineers Corps d'Afrique Volunteers (Company ,) to be obeyed and respected accordingly. This Commission to remain in force until the pleasure of the President of the United States be made known in this behalf. And I do further swear (or affirm) that, to the best of my knowledge and ability I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic ; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same ; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion ; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter, so help me God.
