O'KEEFFE/STIEGLITZ LETTERS O'Keeffe, Georgia July 1941 July 41 Henwar How are you? I love you even if I do not write It has been such a comfort too Thinking of you with Alfred - I am in bed and I just got up to go out into a wet night to close the front gate so the burros that I hear about will not be visiting me in the patio Oh I've had a wicked time having my house fixed so it wouldn't leak - I've connected it to the ground and the workmen just left today - they were here a month - it was awful - but I like being home any way - and tonight the girl who is with me is spending the night in Santa Fe and I am alone. It rained almost all afternoon as if I needed it to wash off the dust of the mess - I have done two things you will like - put a large window in the room where we eat and painted the walls earth red - it rubs off but I don't care And I put a large window facing out toward the cliffs in the corner room - have made the room larger by taking out the partition and adding the little hall to it - it is wonderful It seems rather foolish to do such things these days but I seem to feel alright about it as most of the worlds doings seem strange and unexplainable - Cement seemed the only way I could feel I wouldn't have to have a month of work going on every year - it is ugly but I'll try to forget it - I didn't say much to Alfred about it - it would only bother him and didn't seem necessary But I'm through with it now! When are you coming to see me? I look forward to you here? Fondly Georgia - It is pretty fine and still sitting here alone tonight - July [Aug] 1941 Aug/41 Henwar - Our last two letters crossed - and I intended to write again but it was only intentions - . Then there is a letter from you again this morning - I like like to think of you in the rooms there with any one you choose to have with you I have written Crystal and Crystal only yesterday that I will renew my lease. I had till August first to decide. I am glad that you like your new picture. Alfred and Daer[?] both wrote of seeing the pict[?] and both seemed to have enjoyed it. I have gone to wonderful places around here on the ranch evenings - found a new smaller cave up beyond Navajo Canyon - There are such wonderful places here that I have never taken you - You must come. - Almost every evening we go out - Is there any chance that you come? As always Georgia Sept. 1941 Henwar I hope that you turn your moving in this direction even tho I am not writing often - I think of you It is fall in the air - aspens yellowing - 2 frosts here - Warm lovely days - the cool nights Today it rains and I have a fire - I hope you get here - I think you know that - We have a baby here - illegitimate child of girl I had in spring and still here - got her married this week - that was one achievement - A very good healthy baby being raised by book - Had the boy christened at the wedding - his name is Maximilliano Alfredo Martinez - Isn't that pretty good! Come - if you can Love Georgia - Am glad the Zoo worked out so well - There's a child here with as wonderful a smile as I have ever seen - he is about 9 I think. - I am always wishing you could use him Bring your friend with you if you want to and it works out naturally and conveniently Transcribed and reviewed by contributors participating in the By The People project at crowd.loc.gov.
