O'KEEFFE/STIEGLITZ LETTERS O'Keeffe, Georgia 1942, Oct.-Nov. Box 1 Folder 20 Oct. 1942 [*end Oct/42*] Henwar - The deer on the mountain is white this morning with a few other white spots for him to leap about and play with Ive wanted to write you for ages - must at least say that to you this morning - it is Sunday I believe it is Friday - but I am not sure - I can not sleep so sit up to write - I've had a little cold - not much but enough to make me sit and darn my stockings yesterday - it is very early in the morning now - and such a fine light moonlight I went out and walked about a little - it is not cold - I would be camping over in the Black place if my nose had behaved - I wanted to go before it got too cold - it is between Lybrooks and the Otis place - I have my reservations to go East on Nov. 22 - Will spend some hours in Chicago on the 23 and plan to be in N. Y. on the 24th - It seems an impossible idea but is what I plan to do. I settle [?? ??] with a kind of feeling that I am part of it and the idea of leaving seems very remote - The yellow along the Chama was wonderful day before yesterday - I went to The White Place and have to go almost to Abiquiu before I turn off and go up a river bed - At the White Place four small cotton woods seemed very brilliant against the queer white formations - it was very good - The good things always make me wish for you - knowing how you would like them too I have a friend who has a ranch about 20 miles from Las Vegas - came over and we went home with him - through Chimio - Truchas and Trampas over the mountains and down through Mora - it was very good - a very bright day - aspens all yellow - in open car we then rode in the mountains over there - I had no idea it was such good country - all one afternoon riding through a gorge almost as fine as Yosemity - He has been trying to get me to ride with him in the mountains over there for five years - and I never seemed to get around to it - it was a good trip - we returned through Taos - They all seem very odd to me there - Spud sort of playing house with a little book stall set up in an eating place. - Met him on the street as usual - - they all seem of the long ago - Maria - the girl who lives here with me - had gotten very light the last night at Richards and in the midst of some 3-0 soldiers who had spent the day there - started an awful fight between two of the men - Then she left and went to bed - It was very funny - She was up in the morning like a shining light - it seemed very funny to see this tall clean fresh intelligent girl rolling around on the floor in a huddle with a steel mill worker. The bully of the crowd - at dawn she was out in her pajamas and wraper - along the river and through the woods - came in dripping wet a little after sun up and looking like the dawn - - remembering only about half of what went on the night befor - Human kind is odd - and I guess wonderful - Look forward to seeing you - here - at [??] or where ever - G 40 Horatio 8th & 14th Ed. Lampell WA 9-5949 Bu 8-0037 E. (? Mendenhall) Nov. 1942 [*early Nov/42*] Henwar! I have your green ink and red stamp - and Im so glad to have it It is raining and there is snow on the cliffs and on the mesa to the West - other far away are hidden I am sorry I was not in town when you spent 5 days in bed so that I could visit you -. i look forward to seeing you - so very much - We have had such lovely weather - it will change with the rain I guess - I forgot to tell you when I wrote about that trip down from Taos that I stopped to see Marie It was about 8 at night the big house all dark - no answer to my knock - Finally I went to the house in the orchard - hard to get in the gate - I could see a light - then Marie dozing under a lamp - I could find the door - had forgotten where it was so called - she came out - same old girl - was alone - we stayed about 2 hours - she gave us cold roast goose, cellery, stewed peaches, milk and cookies - all standing b y the ice box - - then all sat by the fire - a very large bed of very hot coals - a stick of wood almost gone - Marie so colorful and alive as always - It was fine - Then just as we were leaving the man came in - We talked of you before he came and when I said to her - come up and see me she whispered - you come and see me - I wish you had been along - for time with her seemed to glow and sparkle - it was lovely Must go on with the day - My love to you G.
