O'Keeffe/Stieglitz Box 2 folder 3 Letters O'Keeffe, Georgia 1946, Sept.-Oct. Sept. or Oct. 1946 Sunday morning - such a still clear bright world - a white moon still hanging over the long mesa - A few nights ago the sky was full of falling stars - I wish you had seen it - I thought the window glass must be doing some thing off to my eyes so walked out doors to be [?] - it was amazing to be seeing falling stars falling all over the sky Yes - my world is very good - such a feeling of quiet and peace - Little Francis is very quiet and surprisingly efficient when left alone - she is getting a divorce from her husband (I had scolded her well for marrying him last year) - she's very happy to be here so at present everything is very quiet and 3/ And they drove off into the moonlight in his open car as usual -- My only visitor so far except Maria - The only morning I have driven out for the mail -- when I stopped the car I sat a minute thinking -- it is no use to look -- There will not be a letter any more. -- Then when I looked -- there was your letter -- lying alone in the box -- it was very good to have -- right at that moment -- I would like to kiss you warmly for it -- I was up in the aspens one day to get vigas for the Abiquiu house -- There were dark storm clouds over every thing -- even a little snow in the air -- I told the aspens about you and they said they knew -- we picked up a man by the road doing very well -- It all feels just wonderful -- Cady came yesterday afternoon -- we took a walk up into one of the areas of the cliff -- a very fine place. -- When we came indoors he brought in a bunch of paintings -- and his cross stitch sewing - We settled down in the sun in my corner room. -- he to sew and I to look at the paintings -- Afterwards we got started framing the paintings -- matting them and framing them one way and another so it was supper time before we knew it could be -- Beans -- cellery -- chillie and melon -- really the best honey dew melon I ever ate -- part of Marias melon crop and really extraordinarily good -- Of course his little dog almost frightened the life out of my cat -- under the pines -- unconscious and bleeding -- he had fallen from his wagon and been dragged -- such things seem a natural part of this earth and transition from tree to lumber -- His family were so oddly unconcerned when we took him to them -- the women kept on tending the chillie on the stove I must be out into this fine day -- My love to you G. Oct. 1946 [*Oct/46*] I am here -- The gramma grass is very full of seed -- making the plain look very alive -- It is very still and wonderful -- Oh yes really wonderful -- I watched you at the window till the plane went off -- it was good to see you there to know you there - I am so fond of you - you have been very kind to me these past weeks - very kind - My trip was good - even through rain and over the clouds - I was not sick - It was a good trip Maria met us - came up and helped me settle in - she is gone - Francis is here - she is a quiet little think - and good to have around - It feels very right to be here My love to you ~ Georgia - Oct. 1946 Your letter with film idea enclosed came yesterday as I went on my way to Espanola to see Orvill about my generator and to get my paint box at the express. There was such a bunch of letters that I did not read them till I got into bed at night and as I finished reading them I wanted to cry - they all had to be answered - Ive spent today at it - They made me feel so terribly connected with the city - Your movie idea is like a dream - not quite clear - but some thing - and I feel so uninteresting - after all these letters I feel a bit like every bodys tool - The drive to Espanola yesterday was wonderful - still and warm and yellow - it is good here My love to you - no I don't want to - rent my apartment. It is being washed and painted and cleaned up and I want it clean when I return G. Oct. 1946 Henwar - Joe had a good day - in an odd way - started working - drawing rather nice - Then a very poor little painting - but I like getting started - Then this afternoon Richard drove up with 3 odd females - one his sister and two others He brought me your telegram - things get around that way here - He also brought me a gallon and a half of cream and an enormous chunk of butter. When he had gone little Francis and I walked - quite a long walk - it was dark when we came in - such a bright star setting over the lone mesa - and I wondering what you will think of photographing in this fantastic country - and will you really come to photograph this fall - My house just with little Francis is very nice - She had a hard time with the boy she was married to and is so happy to be here - it is very quiet and sweet - She does very well too - Made beautiful bread today - The old lazy cat caught some sort of an animal to eat today too - It was good to have the word from you - I didn't get to the show at the Metropolitan - I wanted to because I liked the young man who put it together - Davidson is his name I think - The sun and the wind speak of you.
