O'KEEFFE/STIEGLITZ LETTERS O'Keeffe, Georgia 1946, Nov. Box 2 Folder 4 Nov. 2, 1946 Henwar I wonder why I don't write you - I think things to you often - It seems that you should know that the chillie is very red - really red - getting darker as it dries. I have two long strings in the patio -There have been large bunches of chrysanthemums too - and tonight as I drove up from Abiquiu in the moonlight with its western sky still very light - all the mesas and mountains had such smooth sharp wonderful outlines - long [f???] lines - I spent last weekend down in the valley at Mary Wheelwight's - working on a [cotton?] wood tree - so big and yellow it [was?] good. My days are quiet and very good - I feel very good about being here - - And think often of how you would like it too My love to you G. Sat - morning - grey - I mend two pairs of stockings - then I mend two spots on the roof that leaked a little because there are big white and dark shapes that look like snow moving across the mountains and I sat by the dining room fire on a black sheep skin rug for a long time after breakfast - Did my darning there - - . Nov. 9, 1946 Henwar I have your letter this morning - So maybe you will really do your Southwestern movie Well - that would really be some thing acomplished after all these years After reading your letter this morning I crossed the portalle - and I had to laugh - the mountains and mesas have been covered with snow for days ---- and the plains at the of the Pedernal are a strip of white - dark clouds and shining white ones and spots of sun and shadow seemed to be doing everything they knew how to do - So when you ask me about the weather - all I can say is that the weather is every way - There was a day and a half of snow last week - it was so very beautiful - you can't think of anything more lovely - I had two long walks in it Everyone says it will be a long hard winter - - Well - You know how it is - it is good - My love to you hastily G Nov. 11?, 1946 [*Nov 11?/46*] Sunday afternoon I have just reread your letter - - yesterday. I was very busy when I wrote - painting and seeing about two people hauling in some fire place wood - As I reread it you mention Xmas - I wonder when you plan to come? At present for over a week we have had threatening skys - flurries of snow - The aspens and cottonwood are gone - but the snow was wonderful - and with the threatening sky there are always such unexpected flashes of sun light - you might almost say spaces of sun light - Will you be here for a few days befor you start for God knows where - The Shallico is in November this year I hear - near the end - There is a Fire Dance at Saw Mill near Ft. Defiance - the 19th will be the 3/ If I planned to stay all winter it would be different -- I would settle in with enough food to stay and not bother to go to town -- but closing the house and getting away in snow could be difficult -- However I do not really fear it -- I am also a little concerned about the place and what I must do there -- and am not even clear about what it will be -- It seems I should be at it what ever it is -- Will you go in and see Andrew and see how things are. Dorothy Norman had the whole place a litter with her things -- books to send out -- when I came [?] away. I wish I could stay here and not go to town at all --- My love to you G. last day - When the snow was deep the Abiquiu House was as beautiful as any thing you ever saw But it is such a satisfying feeling to be here - It feels so right - as if I can settle more easily into a new pattern - or should I say an adjusted pattern for my way of life I have been at work for the past 10 days - that is very good - As you think of your picture - don't forget the gramma grass - it is particularly fine this year - For I hope you make a beautiful picture - ! I had planned - eagerly - to go to town about Dec. 1st - It is pretty far away here with just a little slip of a Spanish girl - Monday - This morning it is clear and cold - at 11 - 3/4 of an inch of ice on the running stream of the arroyo I cross for the mail - The late moon with the dawn was startlingly brilliant- Oh it is all alright - . Nov. 19, 1946 Nov 19 Henwar I have your letter I must be in N.Y. not later than Dec. 2 The Mod Art wants to give Stieglitz a big show and I can not decide from here It is really wonderful now warm today Cold at night ~ G. Nov. 26, 1946 Tuesday - JM Nov. 26 Last night my note was so hurried —- I had been working all day and it was mail time This morning at the mail box [bas] was a herd of sheep —- almost a thousand I would say —- and a man on a horse that was very quiet but moved as if it’s feet were springs It was wonderful—- I know of nothing better—- I would gladly stay here but Alfreds things I must get in order—- that is why I go—- Many [moments?] go what is here I would wish to share with you - because so often I feel you would see what I see - I haven't written you much of it - oh - I don't know why the Abiquiu Tapia is leveled and planted with winter wheat and is as beautiful as any dream Today I go to the Shallico Sunday I fly to N. Y. I will wire you time when I know about 9 A.M. I think - I am glad you have a new girl - that is the way it should be - I hope it remains good - My love G. Nov. 1946 Henwar Your note touches my heart -- and days go by and I do not write. When the moon is the very thinnest new moon and I see it just about to drop down when the sun is gone -- and all the horizons are so very sharp and clear --- I wish you were seeing it with me --- I'd be along on Dec. 1st. It seems almost impossible for me to imagine the city - My love to you G. Nov. 1946 Henwar I received the script - You could undoubtedly make some thing lovely. I dont imagine the republicans will let you do it next year. I will be in town Dec 2nd -- If you really want to do it and are ready to maybe I could come back I can not tell till I get to town Ill be seeing you G.
