The trip was uneventful. -- I didn't leave my seat until we arrived in Ft. Edward-- 40 minutes late, my brother's chauffeur at the station awaiting me.-- Ran through a violent rainstorm on the way to the Lake -- Curious feeling arriving on The Hill. All quiet and clean -- I wonder if any life is left in me-- It was good to have you accompany me to Page 2 the station. And to-day you move to the Penthouse.--I'm glad to know you there. My love Stieglitz My love to Peggy too. July 29, 1942 The Hill July 29-42 Dear Henwar: Well here I am installed on The Hill. One can hear the stillness. The trip was uneventful. I sometimes feel I'm losing the bit of nerve I imagined I had --- I spend most of my time in solitude. No radio. Nothing.--A bit of reading maybe 15 minutes per day.-- I think of you much.-- And see you in your solitude in the Penthouse. And am glad that you have at least that.--- Page 2 I suppose is still a problem for you. In so many ways. maybe in all ways. But whatever---- Ever my love. Stieglitz letter # 17 3/1 188-190 The Hill Sept 4 42 Dear Henwar: It looks as if the 14th will see me at the Penthouse I hope so. -- I hoped to get there sooner but the painters will be at The Place till the 12th. My vacation here has been a sort of purgatory. Maddening itch -- body -- and the general conditions here and world over. -- Fortunately seems to be in fine mettle pg. 2 finally. And for that I am truly grateful -- of course I received your letter and was very glad to have it. I do hope that the penthouse is giving you some peaceful moments -- if such a thing is possible these days. ---- I shall not try to write a letter -- This is just another Hello and messenger of love to you. Stieglitz. pg. 3 When I know when I'll definitely arrive in town I'll inform you. I'm trying to get parlor car reservation.
