This, however, was an over correction; for it supposed the length of the tropical year to be 6551/4 days, which is too great, and induces an error of 7 days in 900 years. Accordingly, as early as the year 1414, it was perceived that the equinoxes were gradually moving from the 21st of March and September, where they ought always to have fallen, had the Julian year been exact. A new reform of the calendar was thus required; and it took place under the popedom of Gregory XIII. by the omission of 10 nominal days after the 4th of October 1582, so that the next day was called the 15th, and not the 5th. This change was immediately adopted by all Roman Catholic countries, but tardily in the countries of Protestantism. In England, THE CHANGE OF STYLE, as it was called, took place after the 2d day of September, 1752, eleven nominal days being then struck out; so that the last day of Old Style being the 2d, the first of New Style, (the next day,) was called the 14th year in England in 1752, shortened the preceding year, 1751, by a full quarter. Previous to that time, the year was held to begin with the 25th of March, and the year 1751 accordingly did so; but that year was not suffered to run out, being supplanted on the 1st day of January by the year 1752, which it was enacted should commence on that day. Russia is now the only country in Europe in which the old style is still adhered to, and the difference between the European and Russian dates amounts, at present to about two weeks. UNITED STATES HOTEL IN BOSTON. This Hotel is the largest public house in New England; situated at the termination of the Norwich, Western and Worcester Railroad. One shewing the Sunday Letters, Golden Numbers and Days on which Easter falls, fora century or more: One is of the mean new moon in January, for the period of a Lunar Cycle - and one, of the Rising and Setting of the Sun for every day in the year, and Equation of time: with brief directions for adjusting the Almanac for any given year. Back of this stationary sheet, are 1st a moveable one, containing a circle of Mean Lunations with the phases of the Moon marked on it New, Full and Quarters, exhibiting her changes through the year, opposite the days on which they take place. 2nd are, containing a circle of the days of the week with an Index of the Sunday Letter, to adjust it to the days of the Month for any year; 3d, one, containing a circle of Moveable Feasts and Fasts of the Ecclesiastical Year. On the back side, it is purposed to have several useful Tables Astronomical, Civil and Religious, a Table of Dominical Letters a Table of Solar and Lunar Eclipses for the rest of the present Century; a Table of the exact time of the Lunar changes in every month for the period of a Lunar Cycle, 14 years. Instead of compelling the learner to burden his memory with a mass of matter, rendered rendered unintelligible, by not knowing the use to which it is to be applied, he is enabled to make the application as he proceeds, and see the use and propriety of each definition and rule at every step of his progress.
