October 16, 1942
Dearest Mother,
Congress has pulled a [fortune?] - this draft is going through in a hurry. And I don’t want to be [catch?] in the infantry. Enclosed is my application please get it back as soon as you can.
I’ve inquired about drawing. There is applications to [?] received. I’d hate to take a chance.
I need three letters of reccommendation [sic.] and a [?] certification [?] of the fellows at the office - [?] [Rease?]. This way I may be deferred, and reserves won’t be called until next July. I’d hate to spend Xmas

Please send this in a hurry - It’s a race against time.
Things aren’t going bad - but this draft has upset everyone.
