My dear Mother, ~
Mother’s day is being observed over here by having every man write a letter to his best friend, his mother. It has now been a long time since I bid you good-bye, but it seems like yesterday. Let us hope and pray that before another year rolls bye [sic] that we will be united again and living a peaceful, quite [sic] life with those whom we love. It is Sunday, but you would never know it in this particular part of the world. Just think what would be the program if I was home today. Doubt if I would have got up any later as it was close to nine o’clock when I left my humble bunk. Had breakfast about ten, consisting of bacon, fried by myself, potatoes, also fried by myself very good coffee, without cream and
bread and above all oleo, a very good substitute for butter. It tasted just as good as lamb chops french fried and maybe half a grapefruit into which a little grape juice had been frozen. But give me the last named. Will have dinner in about one hour, four-thirty, beans ^are^ & is the chief article on the menu for dinner. Nevermind Ma, I never was fussy what I got to eat. What say? If there is such a thing as Father’s or sister’s day I will try to tell them of some other little thing that takes place in our outfit. Wish you had a picture of my home over here.
Well Ma, guess you know I would already love to be with you today, but you are patriotic enough to know that it is impossible under existing conditions
With all the love in the world
Edgar.
