>> From the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. >> There are over 5 million maps in the collections of the Library of Congress. Thousands of those are available online at loc.gov. When exploring maps, we can search all maps or we can choose to browse the Library's map collections. Let's search for one of the more interesting maps, Mount Vernon. Notice the different options available for viewing the search results. We are looking at the List view, but we could also select another view to further explore our search results. The Gallery view displays large thumbnails with titles of the maps. The Grid view shows small thumbnail images without titles, so more fit on the page. We are going to look at the Gallery view now. It's one easy way to view search results. When you browse through the results you'll see the digitized image of part of a map of Mount Vernon, George Washington's estate, as surveyed by Washington himself. On the bibliographic record for this map, you can see more information and you can enlarge and zoom to explore the map in detail. The Library provides several download options so you can save a copy of the map for offline use in your classroom. In addition, there are numerous options for sharing and saving the bibliographic record. The website's Share/Save feature makes it easy to share or save a link to any item's bibliographic record.
