>> Hi. My name is Michelle Krowl, and I'm the Civil War and Reconstruction Specialist in the Manuscript Division at the Library of Congress. Many people may not know that for quite a while in presidential history, presidential inaugurations typically occurred on March 4, much of that probably being because of the difficulty in transportation as well. But before you had airplanes and high speed trains, it took a little bit longer, so there was a much longer period of time between the election and the inauguration. The last president to be inaugurated on March 4 was Franklin Delano Roosevelt in his first term. That time was shortened, and the inauguration date was set for January 20. So FDR is the last president to be inaugurated on March 4 and the first president to be inaugurated on January 20.
