[ Music ] >> During the Roaring 20s President Calvin Coolidge and his family were gifted a lot of animals. Rebecca was a raccoon. Rebecca received a very special gift: a red bow, a special collar, with her name Rebecca, and her title raccoon of the White House. As well as a leash. >> Hi, my name is Meg McAleer, and I am a historical specialist in the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress. Rebecca was something of an escape artist, and newspapers in Washington loved to report on her crimes. "Rebecca in Disgrace," blared one of the newspaper headings one of the many times she escaped from the White House. One of the most exciting escape episodes took place in 1927 when the family went on vacation to South Dakota in the Black Hills. Rebecca was placed into a stable and at some point, someone left the door open. Very quickly, Rebecca made it up a pine tree, where she proceeded to survey the whole area, deciding what to do next. Eventually, she came down and she was put in timeout. And of course, the nation read about her disgrace once again. The family thought maybe she would be a little bit more comfortable at the zoo, where she continued to entertain her many fans that she had acquired during her White House years. [ Music ]
