>> Welcome to the Newspaper and Current Periodical Reading Room. >> Welcome. >> Welcome. >> Welcome. >> Bienvenidos. >> The Reading Room serves as a gateway to one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of newspapers in the world, as well as recently published scholarly journals, popular magazines, government publications and United Nations documents. Special collections available here include 18th century newspapers, which document the emergence of an American press and the development of the United States from a colony to a republic. Our Historic Events newspaper collection contains news coverage of significant events in U.S. and world history from 1801 to present day. Notable celebrations, political events, natural disasters, inventions and technological advances and more are represented in the collection. In our Reading Room, researchers can also find the largest publicly available comic book collection, which includes over 12,000 U.S. and foreign titles, totaling more than 140,000 issues. The collection is most comprehensive from the mid 1940s on. However many titles date back to the 1930s. Friendly librarians can also assist you in accessing digital materials, including dozens of digital newspaper databases and the Chronicling America Database, a freely available online resource that features millions of pages of digitized historic newspapers. The reading room is open Monday through Saturday with evening hours, Monday through Thursday. Anyone 16 or older with a photo ID can get a free reader identification card and use the reading rooms. But you don't need to visit us in person to make use of our collections or get help with your research. Write to our reference librarians at ask.loc.gov or give us a call at (202) 707-5690. You can also live chat with a librarian during select hours. Reference librarians can assist you with locating and confirming the availability of materials, planning your research, placing requests and more. We hope to see you soon, online or in person in the Newspaper and Current Periodical Reading Room.
